A STUDY ON THE EFFICACY OF SATURATED FATS AND FRESH NATURAL FOODS ON HEALTH AND OBESITY

Abstract.

This article describes the changes that have occurred in our diets since the early 20th Century. We see how good oils such as butter and coconut oil were demonized, and this along with denatured, processed food, led to illness and obesity. We describe a 5 month trial using natural food and saturated fats, and detail the improvement in health, along with weight loss.

Background

Before 1920 obesity, coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes were rare in America (and elsewhere). During the next 40 years these rose enormously, and continue to rise, bringing these to epidemic proportions. Were people starting to eat more animal fat? On the contrary, the consumption of animal fats continued to fall.

Between 1910 and 1970 the proportion of traditional animal fat in the American diet changed from 83 percent to 62 percent and butter consumption fell from 18 pounds per person to 4. Yet by the 1950's heart disease was the largest cause of death. From the 1920,s the consumption of margarine and refined oils increased by 400 percent. This was caused by 'health' advice given out, based on the flawed Framingham Study.

Method

In February 2005 we conducted a Public Lecture with 90 attendees. We gave a brief outline of wellness today, our involvement in this, and our proposed health and weight loss program. 33 people signed on to be participants in the study, 25 women and 8 men. All but two were overweight or obese – the heaviest being 170 +kg. Of the remaining 2, one had experienced rapid weight loss from a commercial weight loss program, but severe muscle wasting. Both had significant health problems, as did the remainder of the participants.

The overall health problems included diabetes, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, gout, sleep problems and depression. Most were taking drugs for these problems, many taking several. All participants were required to have a full set of medical tests before the program commenced.

Participants met, first weekly then every three weeks for group sessions. In these sessions each participant was measured and weighed, and given a Heart Rate Variability (HRV) reading to determine their autonomic nervous system balance, thus their health.

They were further given full instructions on which foods to eat, and which to avoid. Each was also given a month's supply of virgin coconut oil, which was replenished when empty. These sessions were also opportunities to make friends, and exchange ideas and recipes.

At the completion of the 5 months, all participants again visited their doctor to replicate the medical tests. Of the original 33, 25 completed the study. The results were astounding. The highest weight loss was 18kg. But the best result was the improvement in health, as measured by the medical tests, the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) readings, and the fact that only two continued to take any form of medication, and these were drastically reduced.

The best result in terms that the laymen would understand was the fall of 20-25 percent in Mean Heart Rate in all participants from their previously dangerous levels (100+ standing). Two participants were smokers at the beginning of the study, and at the end only 1 continued smoking. Smoking cessation was not an aim of the study, but a pleasing side benefit.

Conclusion

All the results of the study indicate that the taking of coconut oil, along with a nutritious natural diet, not only leads to weight loss, but a vast improvement in health.

We didn't choose the participants in our study. The first 35 who attended the information evening, and signed on were taken. They were mostly elderly and obese.

Would they be up to the challenge of consuming one dessertspoon of coconut oil (an 'un healthy' saturated fat) before each meal? Would they be prepared to accept the need to disregard Dr Rosemary Stanton's advice and give up cereals and bread? After all where would their energy come from? .Why not follow the C.S.I.R.O Total Wellbeing Diet? As John said to the Acting CEO of the C.S.I.R.O the diet is flawed.

Science, in fact, tells us that aspartame, and hydrogenated oils are bad for us. You will certainly lose weight but it will not be a healthy, long term loss. Once you really understand how to lose weight you appreciate that health must first improve, and the focus must be FAT loss.

Thus some may not actually lose weight initially as they firm up and discover that they have however lost centremetres from waist, hips and thighs.

The problem of misinformation starts with the information students are required to learn in most nutrition courses, because vested interests got this misinformation embedded in textbooks. Learn how studies like the Framingham Study have been misinterpreted to suit the interests of the vegetable oil industry.

Here is what the director of the Study recently said:

"In Framingham, Massachusetts, the more saturated fat one ate, the lower the person's cholesterol... We found that the people who ate the most cholesterol, ate the most saturated fat, ate the most calories, weighed the least and were the most physically active."

We would like to issue a challenge. We are so confident of our eating plan that we would like to pit it against any other diet. This would have to be funded, and independently assessed, the criteria being first health improvement, and secondly weight loss that stays off.

Consultants are qualified and experienced in Special Education and Learning Difficulties. The Engelmanns have for many years been aware that diet plays a crucial role in ameliorating the symptoms of such 'disorders'as ADD/ADHD.

Harry's miracle

Harry's parents brought him to us in 2004. They were desperate. He was 11 and had been on drugs for 7 years. Several drugs, including the amphetamines, were 'trialed' on him for periods of 1 to 2 years. When each one failed, another, more potent one was given. None of these had any beneficial effect; he remained more than 4 years below his peers in spelling, reading and maths was disruptive in the classroom and aggressive towards his classmates.

He visited a paediatrician once a year, and the advice he gave was to place the child in hospital for a week for 'drug testing'. His mother had had enough, and refused this request. He had tried tinted lenses, with no improvement. His mother heard about us and brought him to us in desperation.

After only 9 weeks (1 session of one hour per week) Harry was a changed boy (in fact the change began right from the beginning). His reading had jumped 18 months, as had his spelling, and he was now enjoying reading to his little brother every night.

But here is the real 'miracle', according to his mother. She excitedly told us that she called in to the school to do her tuck shop duty and saw Harry surrounded by a group of boys, having what she described as an intellectual conversation. She called her friends and said "Look at Harry, he doesn't 'talk' to other kids, he makes silly jokes, he thumps them on the back. This is really a miracle." His teachers have reported that his behaviour in class has totally changed, and as he said to us "The kids like me now. They ask me to join in their games."

How did we achieve this? Our treatments now are a combination of nutrition, biofeedback, specific exercises, and an individualized educational programme. MY ROAD TO AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE

My name is Ian and I am in Year 8. I have dyslexia, so have had real trouble learning to read. The words seemed to move across the page. I could not learn phonics, and I even had trouble with whole words that you don't sound out.

My other problem was writing stories. They made sense to me but nobody else could read them. I could not spell the words, and also left whole sections out. My mum had taken me along to try all sorts of things, but nothing made any difference. She even bought me coloured glasses, but they didn't work.

By the time I got to Year 8 I became a real problem in the classrooms. Because I couldn't do the work I mucked around, and the school said my parents would have to come and sit with me, and try to keep me on task.

My other problem was that I was being bullied all the time, and I couldn't deal with it. What I really loved was the agricultural subjects, especially all the practical stuff like looking after the horses and cattle, learning what to feed them and how to groom and ride horses. I decided I really wanted to go to Agricultural College.

Mum pointed out to me that I would have to learn to read to get there. She heard about the Engelmanns from Learning Difficulties Australia, and took me to them.

In just 9 weeks I had jumped 12 months in my reading, and my reading is just getting better and better. Kids don't bully me now, as I have been shown strategies like tapping on acupressure points to improve my self-esteem.

The teachers are really pleased with my progress. I've got a long way to go, but I'll make it to Ag College. By the way, I forgot to mention I have had to change my eating to natural foods, and Mum is a great help in this.

I'm now feeling healthy and confident, so confident I've even written a letter to the editor, and had it published.
